Anthology of Argentine Mural

Six artists spent 10 months completing this 220-foot mural tracing the Argentine District of Kansas City, KS, from the Hopewell Indians to today. The mural is between 30th and Woodland on Metropolitan.

Avenue Chronicles Mural

This mural represents a century on Minnesota Avenue -
once the retail and commercial heart of Kansas City,
Kansas. The design was conceived entirely by High School students after studying
historic photographs and talking with community leaders. The mural design is woven
together by a filmstrip in honor of the reopening of the Granada Theater in the summer of
2006. It also features various cameras and vantage points - a movie camera at the left,
a news camera around the time of the 1951 flood, and in the final scene, the artist with
his camera phone and portraits of the youth artists who worked on the mural.

Dawning of a New Day Mural

Intended to honor the importance of generations, family and culture in the African
American community, this mural was designed and painted with help from the
Turtle Hill Neighborhood. The left side of the mural emphasizes the cultural legacy
of African art, dress, architecture and textile patterns. The right side of the mural
mirrors the African skyline with an urban American skyline, and features portraits
of people who have left a significant legacy in American society, many with
connections to Kansas City. The middle section features the seven principles of
Kwanzaa and shows the hope of children and the future.

El Baile de la Vida Mural

A tribute to Mexican folklórico dancing, this mural portrays in vivid color dancers in
costumes from nineteen different Mexican states. They surround a scene of modern
day dancers of all ages. The mural includes familiar Mexican images, including La
Virgen de Guadalupe, skeletons from Day of the Dead celebrations and the
Mexican Coat of Arms. A longtime youth folklórico instructor and parents with young
kids at nearby Douglass Elementary helped design the mural.

Facing the Past, Looking to the Future: A Kansas Hmong Storycloth Mural

Patterned after an embroidered Hmong story cloth, this mural represents
modern and traditional Hmong culture through mirror images of work, play and
celebration. The border design around the outside edges is inspired by the
patterns found in the stitched designs of traditional dresses. The dominant
colors of the mural are blue - the most prevalent color for story cloths and
green - to illustrate the lush green landscapes of Hmong villages.

The Hmong people have lived and farmed in the mountainous regions of
China, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam for centuries. They began immigrating to
the United States after assisting the United States during the Vietnam War. The first
family settled in the Kansas CIty area in 1977. The community has grown to fifteen
hundred people in Kansas City, Kansas.

IMAGO DEI is a nonprofit, professional arts organization working in all disciplines that seeks to understand and cultivate the relationship between community, Christianity, and the arts. Recently opened art center provides professional facilities and programming for literary, visual and performing arts. Fine Arts Gallery showcases local artists and special exhibits.

Kansan Printer Mural

This mural is in the style of WPA murals and shows a printer at a handpress. It was designed with the help of retired printers who worked at the Kansas City Kansan newspaper. It honors the history of the building housed this community’s newspaper for 80 years in the heart of downtown.

Kaw Valley Arts and Humanities Gallery

The Kaw Valley Arts and Humanities Gallery has exhibitions which open on the second Friday of each month from 5-8pm. New exhibits open every month from March - October. Exhibits range from work by students to emerging artists to experienced artists. Other gallery and business venues also sponsor exhibits as part of the Downtown KCK Artwalk every second Friday of each month from March - October. The gallery is open by appointment only on other days throughout the year. Groups may also schedule special viewings of exhibits as well.

National Agricultural Center & Hall of Fame

The National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame was chartered by Congress to honor America’s farmers. Former President Harry Truman’s plow is here along, with more than 30,000 agricultural relics. The beautiful 172-acre setting is home of the Agricultural Hall of Fame, Museum of Farming, National Farmers Memorial, Gallery of Rural Art, Farm Town USA, a nature trail and miniature train rides.

Pandatopia: Somewhere over the Rainbow Mural

This 1600 square foot mural is about the learning & discovery unlocked by books and play. It was painted on the north side of Pandarama Pre-School, which was been teaching thousands of children in its classrooms since 1976. One of the teen artists is an alumnus of Pandarama and another worked there over the summer.

Bomber Builders Monument in honor of those employees who built 6,608 B-25 bombers in the Fairfax district during World War II.

Huron Indian Cemetery

Huron Indian Cemetery was established in 1843 after the forced migration of the Wyandot Nation from their homes near Upper Sandusky, Ohio. Abandoned to the elements, many died of typhoid and cholera. The dead were then carried across to sacred ground, a high point over-looking the meeting of two rivers. Many members of the Wyandot Nation of Kansas still reside in the area.

John Brown Statue

Near the heart of the city, this statue pays tribute to John Brown, one of the nation’s early-day opponents of slavery.

Lewis & Clark Historic Park at Kaw Point

Lewis and Clark expedition arrived at Kaw Point, at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers in Kansas City Kansas, on June 26, 1804. The 6 acre park features an open air education pavilion with interpretive signs about the expedition. Trails run through the woods and along the river. Boat ramp and docking area allow river access.

Old Quindaro Museum

Quindaro Museum preserves and promotes the historical and cultural awareness, educational value and overall importance the African American Community of Quindaro to the history and evolutionary development of Kansas as well as the United States of America.

Piano Technicians Guild Foundation Museum

Rosedale Memorial Arch

The Rosedale Memorial Arch pays tribute to soldiers who served our country in World War I. The Arch, based on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, was designed by Rosedale resident John LeRoy Marshall and dedicated in 1923. In 1993, a monument was added under the Arch to honor the soldiers of World War II, Korea and Vietnam conflicts.

The Legendary Kansans at The Legends

Legendary Kansans, famous for their contributions in art, history, politics, science and sports are the inspiration for - and namesake of - The Legends at Village West.
